Hi Werner,
Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.
>From the description, I understand that when you try to open the fax as the
attachment in the outlook, you get an error "Can't create file: FAX.TIF."
If I have misunderstood your concerns, please do let me know.
Please double check if you have followed the steps to change File
Association:
1. Go to "My Computer".
2. Click "Tools" on the tool bar, and then click "Folder Options".
3. Click "File Types" tab. Under the "Registered file types" list, please
highlight the TIF file association, and then click "Change".
4. Select "Microsoft Office Word" and then click "OK". Note: You can change
it any other programs at this step because we need to change it back to
PowerPoint.
5. Click "Change" again, and then select the specific program used to open
FAX.TIF file.
6. Click "OK".
Actually, when you open file attachments that are considered safe, Outlook
2003, as an extra precaution, places these attachments in a subdirectory
under your Temporary Internet Files directory. When Outlook 2003 first
tries to use a temporary file, it examines the registry to determine if the
following value exists:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security
Value Name: OutlookSecureTempFolder
Data Type: REG_SZ
If the value exists, and it contains a valid path, Outlook 2003 uses that
location for its temporary files. If the registry value does not exist, or
it points to an invalid location, Outlook 2003 creates a new subdirectory
under your Temporary Internet Files directory, and places the temporary
file in the new subdirectory. The name of the new subdirectory is unknown,
is randomly generated, and takes on the following form
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\OLKxxx
Where username is the user name that is used by the person currently logged
on to the computer, and where xxx is a randomly generated sequence of
letters and numbers.
As for this, I would like to suggest that you check if the folder "OLKxxx"
is exist under C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\. If it exists, please check if the user
has the full access permission on the "OLKxxx" folder. If it does not
exist, please check if the user has the full permission on the
"C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\" folder.
Let us perform the following steps to redirect this folder to another one
to test this issue.
1. Close Outlook.
2. Create a folder to obtain the attachments, such as C:\OLAttachments.
3. Click Start, and click Run.
4. Type "regedit" (without the quotation mark) in the text box, and click
OK.
5. Click "+" to locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security\
6. Right click this key, and click Export to export the registry keys.
7. On the right panel, you will see the "OutlookSecureTempFolder" registry
value. Right click this registry value, and click Modify. Please type the
newly created folder path in the "Value data" text box. For example, you
can type "C:\OLAttachments".
8. Right click the OLAttachments folder, and click Properties.
9. In the Security tab, ensure that you have the Full Control permission.
10. Restart the computer to test this problem again.
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

This is could also be caused by the corrupt user profile, so you may also
try to recreate the e-mail profile and see if the issue persists:
1. Open Windows Explorer -> Control Panel, double-click Mail.
2. Click Show Profiles.
3. Select the current profile and click Remove.
NOTE: You may export the rules for the user in the old profile before
delete it, so that you can then import them to the new profile. To do so:
A. Open Outlook, click Tool and then click Rules and Alerts....
B. Click Options.
C. Click Export Rules.
D. Close Outlook.
4. Click Start, click Run, type " C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small
Business Server\Clients\sbsdefault.prf" and press ENTER.
During server setup, a default .prf file named SBSDefault.prf is copied
from CD to \\%sbsserver\clients\Setup. The setup then updates two instances
of %SBSServer% with the name of the server. During client configuration
(http://<sbsserver>/connectcomputer), the file is copied to the client
folder "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Clients"
and %FaxTransport% is replaced with either MSFax XP (for Windows XP) or
SHAREDFAX XP (for Windows 2000).

This issue also can occur if the Fax Mail Tranport component is not
installed or corrupted in Outlook. I suggest you perform the following
steps on the client computer:
1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Mail.
2. Click E-mail Accounts. Click "View or change existing accounts" and
click Next.
3. If the "Fax Mail Transport" item is listed, delete it.
4. Click Add and then click Additional Server Types.
5. On the "Additional Server Types" page, click Microsoft Shared Fax Mail
Transport, and then click Next. Remove the Fax Mail Transport service from
the list of server types.
6. On the E-mail Accounts page, click Finish.
7. Click Close.
If the issue still persists, please help me collect the following
information to isolate the issue:
1. Does this issue happen on all client PCs?
2. Does this issue happen for all uses account? Try the administrator
account on the client PC to see if there is any change.
3. Do you have problem opening attachments other than the fax.tif?
4. When the problematic user directly opens .tif files on the local disk,
will he be able to open them properly?
If you have any questions or encounter any problems, please feel free to
let me know. It is my pleasure to be of assistance.
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| Hello,
|
| We are having a strange problem wehn trying to open a faxmessage in
Outlook
| 2003 (SBS2003). We get the following error message :
|
| "Can't create file : fax.tif. Right-click the folder you want to create
file
| in, and then click properties on the shortcut menu to check your
permissions
| for the folder."
|
| This problem first appeared on 1 computer but it is spreading to 2 other
| computers now. Strange thing is that sometimes when trying again to open
the
| fax, a few seconds later, everything works OK.
| Changing the TIF-file association doesn't help.
|
| Can anyone help ?
|
| Thanks
|
| Werner
