This can be very frustrating because there's no indication of why it's
failing. It just fails. One thing that is easy to overlook and that will
cause the symptoms you are describing is to have forgotten to change the
authentication setting to Basic from it's default NTLM. Hare you
double-checked that? Also, on my machines when I have my VPN connection
established, there is not username/password prompt. Outlook simply connects.
