Re: Volume Licensing

As a client "I" own that product key not the MS Partner. It's not understandable that only my consultant knows the product key if I'm savvy enough to reinstall the server myself.

If you have SBS [this is SBS not SMS right?] media, the sleeve on the outside of disk one is your product key and unique to each SBS install and needs product activation.

Where are you getting your media? You as the customer own the media.
This is SBS...we don't do any 'reporting' of versions that you actually use.

Next nosy question.... why are you needing to reinstall the server?

Volume Licesning media is the way I have my server...but I have the media. There is no "lending" of cdroms. You own them.

You say this client? But this is your own firm, right? I'm confused?

 	Hi,

A company I'm working for has previously bought a system complete with
remote management from another company. According to the person who sold this
system they needed a VL in order to properly use SMS and other technologies.

Well, as long as it works and the other company has cleared this with MS I'm
fine with it. I'm reinstalling the server since I do the job for a fraction
of the price, and then the other company will just set up their part of the
system. However, the company I'm working for never got the key
(understandable both from a licensing point of view and for the original
company to get the job if something breaks) so I extracted it with "one of
those programs". And since the other company wants the whole job they're not
really keen on lending me the CDs either.

So my question to the gurus in here is the following:
* Is the volume license key valid for both basic and premium, or are these
different products all together?
* With volume licensing, don't you buy one key for the whole server 2k3
family and then report which versions you're actually using?

Thanks! I'd really like to get this client up and running as fast as possible!
