thanks for the helpful response

you are right in your description of the problem, but it is sometimes
possible for the external sender to send to the internal user (this is how
the NDR was forwarded to them)

re: your questions/actions:

1. yes email can be sent OK from the server to the external sender
2. the email address is externalsender@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx there is no
website assoctiated with this address; the server postmaster is @he.local,
and the server identifier in the NDR is <HESA02UKER.HE.LOCAL #5.1.1>
3. The issue has only happened 2 times to my knowledge although the external
sender is an important contact and I need to be sure that messages from them
will be received. I will follow up with telnet when it occurs again, thanks
for the instructions and links, I will check them out.

I will wait for the next time!
