RE: Unable to join domain, access email, etc from client connecting to

Hello Robert,

Thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroup.

According to your description, I understand that you cannot join in the SBS
Domain, and access Exchange mailbox, etc. If I have misunderstood the
problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

To narrow down this issue, please answer and perform the following
questions and steps:

1. What's the exact detail error message when you are trying to join in
the SBS Domain? Please make a screen shot of the error message and attach
it in your reply.

2. As you mentioned, you found Event Error 1030 in the Event log, please
kindly describe the detail information of this Event error.

3. If you want to modify the Group Policy setting that is configured when
you installed the Windows Small Business Server 2003 Update, install the
hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

842933 "The following entry in the [strings] section is too long and has
been truncated" error message when you edit or view Group Policy in Windows
Server 2003, in Windows XP, or in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842933

Please note: the above article contains several hotfix for different
operating system. Please choose the one for Windows Server 2003.

4. I think we can check the Local Security Policy settings on the SBS
Server:

Check the following Local Policies:

1) Open Administrative Tools
2) Open Local Security Policy
3) Double click Local Policy
4) Double click User Rights Assignment
5) Search for the following policies:
a. "Access this computer from the network"
b. "Deny access to this computer from the network"

6) The default settings for the "Access this computer from the network"
policy is to allow: Administrators, Power Users, Users, Backup Operators,
and the
Everyone group. All should have check boxes checked

7) The default setting for the "Deny access to this computer from the
network" policy is blank. No one should be listed in this policy (not
configured).

8) Ensure that all the groups are listed to allow access and that no one is
listed in the deny policy.

After that, let us reboot the Server to test the situation.

5. Gather the Group Policy result for a problematic client computer:

a. On the SBS Server, click Start->Run, type GPMC.MSC and then click OK.

b. When the Group Policy Management console opens, right click on "Group
Policy Results" and choose "Group Policy Results Wizard".

c. Click Next.

d. Choose "Another computer" and then type the name of the problematic
computer and click Next.

e. Click Next.

f. Click Next to start the progress.

g. Click Finish.

h. The results should be generated and you can view it in GPMC. Then right
click the report node and choose Save Report. Save the report to a file and
then paste all contents of the report in your reply.

I appreciate your time and cooperation. If anything is unclear, please feel
free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Nathan Liu (MSFT)
