RE: Disappearing Network Share Subfolders

Hello Eric,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that some of your Windows XP SP2 clients cannot view the
subfolders in share folders on SBS 2K Server. If I have misunderstood your
concern, please let me know.

Yes, I agree with you, this is may be a wired issue. Due to lack of detail
information, I need your help to gather more information for research.
Please see:

1. When did the issue occur? Did clients can view subfolders in share
folders correctly before?

2. Just double confirm, does this issue occur randomly? Can you reproduce
the issue?

3. How many share folders store on the SBS 2K server? If you have several
share folders, do the other share folders have the issue?

4. Does the problematic share folder locate at NTFS or FAT32 disk?

5. How many client workstations connect to the server? What is the
connection method (e.g. Modem slow link or wireless)? How do client access
the share folder (e.g. RDP or VPN)?

6. Still double check, you mentioned "Sometimes 1/2 of them show, sometimes
it shows 2 of them, sometimes it's just missing one or two out of about 30
subfolders", do the disappeared subfolders exactly valid in the share
folder? i.e. can you access disappear subfolder on the server console?

Please see my suggestions:

============

Suggestion 1:

I suggest that we perform clean boot on the SBS 2K Server to see whether
there is any third party interference. To do so, please see:

a. Download System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) on the SBS 2K
Server from following link:

Update for Windows XP (KB906569)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9689f6e9-aded-44b8-
bbbb-beae1b4a4bc9&displaylang=en

b. Double click Msconfig.exe to initialize System Configuration Utility.

c. Click Start->Run, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotation marks) and
click OK.

d. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click the
"Startup" tab.

e. Click to clear all the check marks from the list box under "Startup".

f. Click the Services tab, check the "Hide all Microsoft Services" box and
then click the "Disable All" button to disable the non-Microsoft services.

g. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

Suggestion 2:

[Note]: When performing the following steps, please temporarily disable all
the third party software and anti-virus software, firewall.

a. Open Group Policy Management\Forest\Domains\DomainName.local\Default
Domain Policy.

b. Right click Default Domain Policy, select Edit.

c. In the Group Policy Object Editor. Expand to Computer
Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Polices\Audit
Policy.

d. On the right pane, double click "Audit object access", check the box
"Define these policy settings", and the two boxes "Success" and "Failure".

e. Go to problematic client workstation, go to Start -> Run "gpupdate
/force".

f. Right click the share folder on the server, go to Properties.

g. Security tab -> Advanced -> Auditing tab -> Add.

h. Add account "everyone", and click OK.

i. Apply onto "This folder, subfolders and files". Check the boxes "Delete
Subfolders and Files" and "Delete".

j. Back to Auditing tab. Check the two boxes underneath "Allow inheritable
auditing¡" and "Replace auditing entries on all¡"

k. Click OK twice.

l. When the issue reoccurs, on the server, run "eventvwr" (without
quotation marks), check whether there is any error. If yes, double click
it, click the Copy button and paste the full content to the Newsgroup.

Please take your time to perform the steps above and collect the
information for us to troubleshoot your issue. I am looking forward to
hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee
