RE: Shared Audio and Video on SBS Network

Hello Artuero,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you have some consulting questions regarding the Windows
Media Center Edition (MCE) with SBS 2K3 Server. Please see my reply for
each of your questions:

1. Q: Is there a way for Windows Media Center Edition to access the files
on the SBS server without compromising security?

A: Create a local user account on the Windows XP MCE computer with the same
username and password as his domain account. Also, do you have ISA Server
installed? If yes, what is the edition? If you are running ISA 2004, you
need to many create an Access Rule to Allow access Local Host for MCE.

Additional information:

887212 You cannot join your computer to a domain in Windows XP Media Center
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=887212

2. Can other devices like the MP3/WMA receivers (I forget what they call
them, but I think Microsoft is pushing Windows Media Connect to connect
with them) access and play the files?

This appears to be related to Windows Media Centre issue. This inquiry
would best be posted to the < microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter>
Newsgroup. The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will
get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other customers who read
the newsgroups regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from
your interaction with us. Thank you for your understanding!

3. You mentioned "Can the MCE store items (such as TV shows, I don't really
know as I haven't used MCE yet) on the SBS server even though it is not in
the domain?" and "users could not delete or modify files on the shared
drive."

I understand that you want to configure client do not have permissions to
delete/modify files after they create files in Shared Folder from MCE on
SBS server.

I created a shared folder on SBS Server, I assigned following permissions
for a test use:

Traverse Folder/Execute File
List Folder/Read Data
Read Attributes
Read Extended Attributes
Read Permissions

However, I can not create files in the shared folder. To create files in
the shared folder, I need to assign "Change" Permission on the shared
folder, then I can create folder inside. However, "Change" permission
overlaps with Delete and Modify, which means, if we assigned "Change"
Permission we also can delete/modify files inside the Shared Folder.

I am appreciated your time. If anything is unclear, please feel free to let
me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee
