RE: How to make your server become a NAT Box aka router

Hi Ankit:
Thank you for posting here. Also many thanks for Steve's input.
As Steve mentioned, the CEICW Wizard (Configure E-mail and Internet
Connection Wizard) will automatically configure the SBS Server to be a NAT
box. The SBS server will perform the network address translation (NAT) for
the internal workstations. The private IP address will be translated to the
public IP address which can be used to access the internet.
As you said, a router is a gateway, DHCP server, NAT, and firewall. The
most wonderful design of the SBS Server: the CEICW Wizard, will do all the
above things for you:
1. The dual NIC based SBS Server will function as the default gateway for
the internal clients. All the traffic initiated from the clients will be
sent to the internal NIC of the SBS Server.
2. After we configured the CEICW Wizard, the DHCP server installed on the
SBS Box will take the responsibility to assign IP address/DNS/WINS and
other TCP/IP settings to the internal workstations.
3. As I mentioned before, the SBS Server will act as a NAT device and
perform the network address translation.
4. If your SBS Server is Premium Edition, you must have ISA Server
installed. The CEICW Wizard will automatically create the access
rules/publishing rules for the ISA Server and make the ISA fully functioned
as a firewall.
If your SBS Server is Standard Edition, the CEICW Wizard will configure the
RRAS to be the basic firewall. Only the services that are configured by
CEICW Wizard can be accessed by the internet users.
For more detailed information about the CEICW Wizard, you can refer to this

2003

I hope the above information helps. Please feel free to let me know if
there is anything I can do for you.
Have a nice day! :)
Best Regards
