RE: configuring client users

HI Wendie,

Welcome to SBS newsgroup.

Issue description:
=================

I understand that you encountered problem when configuring the client on
SBS domain.

Analyzing and suggestions:
=================

Generally speaking, we use "connect computer wizard" to connect the client
computer to SBS server while we need use "set up computer wizard" to set up
client computer, it is also your best interest to run "assign computer
wizard" to assign the application such as the outlook 2003 with SP1 and
shared fax clients also the IE 6 SP1 to the client computer automatically.
It will save a lot of time to configuring the client computer. It is your
best interest to rerun the wizard again to add the client computer account
on SBS 2003.

Then you can run connect computer wizard on your client computer to make
sure that the client computer is joined correctly to SBS domain, you can
check the computer properties on the client computer to make sure that the
client computer is belong to SBS domain.

For user account issue, please understand that if you join the client
computer to SBS domain, you need to use a domain account not the local
account to let the client computer logon domain and logon Exchange mailbox
via outlook. You do not need to add the every user via "connect computer
wizard" by default, if you can use any Domain account to logon SBS domain
from client computer.

You can create the domain account via Add user wizard on SBS 2003 server
management console. Please note this will create a domain account not the
local account. If you want to use the local profiles on the local client
computer, please refer to the KB article below to see how to restore the
profiles:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314045

For more information, I suggest you refer to SBS 2003 getting started
guide, it will help you familiar with a domain environments:

Additional information:

How to configure your email setting on SBS 2003 domain:

If the Mailbox type is ''User Mailbox'', the emails retrieved from the
individual POP3 account will be pushed to the corresponding Exchange
mailbox you choose in ''Exchange mailbox''. If it is ''Global Mailbox'',
the emails retrieved from the remote POP3 email server will be
automatically be distributed to the corresponding Exchange user based on
the email address. For example, ken@xxxxxxx will be distributed to
Ken@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

In addition, if you used the ''Assign Users to this Computes and Migrate
their Profiles'' option to map your domain account profile to the existing
local computer account when using the Connectcomputer wizard, the resulting
domain account will not have the Outlook Exchange profile configured
automatically, you will need to automatically create the Outlook profile to
connect to your SBS Exchange server:

1. On the client computers, click Start '' Control Panel, and then access
the ''Mail'' applet. Note: If you have not installed or run Outlook on this
computer, you will not see the ''Mail'' applet. You will need to first
install Outlook and run it at least once.

2. Click ''E-mail Accounts'', choose ''Add a new e-mail account'' and click
Next.

3. In the ''Server Type'' interface, choose ''Microsoft Exchange Server''
and click Next.

4. In the ''Exchange Server Settings'' interface, input your SBS server''s
name in ''Microsoft Exchange Server'', input the domain user name in ''User
Name'', and then click Next.

5. Open the ''Mail'' applet and enter ''E-mail Accounts'' again.

6. This time, choose ''View or change existing e-mail accounts'' and click
Next.

7. In the ''E-mail Accounts'' interface, make sure the ''Microsoft Exchange
Server'' account is ''Set as Default'' and ''Mailbox - <Username>'' is set
in ''Deliver new e-mail to the following location''.

You can refer to the KB article below to configure your SBS network for

|
| I have been experimenting with SBS2003 before we set it upon our office.
At
| present we have a small peer to peer network which we want to add a
server.
| Every workstation now has everyone in the office set up on it as a user
so we
| can hotseat. We get our mail thru Outlook with pst files stored on the
file
| server.
|
| After installing the server software, I set up users on the to do list
that
| matched my names on the experimental client pc. Ran
| servername/connectcomputer on the client and it found my machine. I
added
| myself as a user. It wouldn't let me use my settings, said I needed to
share
| the folder under documents and settings. I did so but it still wouldn't
| work. When it rebooted, I lost all my documents and email. I also
couldn't
| add any of the other users on the machine. I did a system restore so no
harm
| done but I think I am not understanding this. So I have the following
| questions:
|
| Could I not use my setting for my user name because I have a password on
my
| account? I couldn't find anything under sharing other than ticking share
| this folder. It didn't match what the wizard was telling me to do.
|
| Do I have to add every user on the client when I run the client
| configuration wizard. Or can I just create a user on the server and log
in
| as that person as long as I have added the computer to the network.
|
| If that is true, do I need to set up an account for everyone on every
| separate machine in our office, or if there is an account already set up
on
| the server, do I just log in as that person once I have added the
computer to
| the network. In otherwords, if John has an account now on every machine
,
| once I create John as a user on the server, can I just log in as John on
any
| machine without configuring his account? Don't know if I am explaining
that
| very well.
|
| I have Outlook 2003 already installed on my machine that I was
experimenting
| with but when it created a new account, it said it couldn't find Outlook
and
| it needed to be installed. So will I have to reinstall Outlook 2003 on
every
| machine?
|
| In other words, I don't know the best way to migrate the network we have
now
| to a server based network. If anyone has any ideas or tips, please let
me
| know. I have looked at migration tools but they seem to be for NT4
servers
| to 2003, unless I am reading them wrong.
|
| Thanks in advance. I think I am in over my head but I am encouraged by
the
| good advice from the wise people on this forum!
