Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your information.
Although I can provide useful information regarding the issue, we have the

|
| You have to wonder why someone who works for MS bothers to post in public
if
| they don't bother to get off their *** and actually help anyone. It's
| totally idiotic for MS to fail to answer questions they are capable of
| answering directly instead of looking for excuses to say I'm not going to
| help you. Maybe that passes for doing a job in the private groups, and
maybe
| my post passes for a flame in any groups, but if you aren't going to even
| try to help....don't post.
|
| Crina....you were not asked to support a migration of a server, you were
| asked how to restore Sharepoint to a different server as a disaster
recovery
| option. You know, what happens if someone asks you how to restore
Sharepoint
| from a server that previously crashed and they had to rebuild from
scratch.
| Would that be "I don't know how to provide technical support because I'm
not
| trained on how to help people who failed to keep their server from
| crashing?" You really should try to read the question thoughtfully before
| you post a a useless reply like that..
|
| The issue here is only complicated by a concern of whether or not the
| Sharepoint is running different SP level on the original vs the target
| server. If you have the Sharepoint on the same SP level, you can use
| Frontpage or STSADM or an SQL backup and restore.
|
| If you have SP1 level on the new server, and not on the original server,
you
| could upgrade the SP level on the original server and preserve all the
| options. Otherwise, you will find you need a workaround. Depending upon
the
| server migration plan, you might be in the position to migrate the
| Sharepoint at the same SP level if adding SP1 is a follow-up taks to the
| migration (you aren't using slipstream media). Therefore, the answer to
the
| question asked is in one of the following KBs, depending upon the
| circumstance.
|
| I generally recommend using Frontpage as the prefered answer in all cases.
| There's really nothing unique to Swing Migration going on here, this is
just
| a case of backup and restore of Sharepoint. If that's hard to do, then
maybe
| MS should look at making Sharepoint content protection a little easier to
| handle.
