Updating / changing drivers is the easiest thing to do..
It will either work or not work...
To me much it's much quicker than returning the old one and getting a new
one
But if your are not comfortable doing that, that's fine.

I do recommend an External serial Modem if you can

Reason why? more reliable, and
in case of lighting on your phone lines, usually just fries the modem and
not your mother board
on a PCI modem and you will loose your motherboard...

Also you can have your phone lines checked for free to where the come into
your building.
(once they com into your building it will cost money however)
(this is the USA standard SLA anyway)
