RE: can not access microsot website

Hi:
Thank you for posting here. I am sorry for the delayed response due to
weekend. Please understand that the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by
Microsoft Support professionals to answer your systems and applications
questions. Your understanding is greatly appreciated!

>From the description, I understand that neither the internal clients nor
the SBS Server can access the www.microsoft.com web site, but they can
browse the other web sites without difficulty. If I have misunderstood your
concern, please do let me know.

Before we go any further, please refer to this step-by-step article to
re-run the CEICW Wizard, the wizard will help us automatically configure
the network settings:

825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

Since you are using the SBS Standard Edition, I assume that you are not
using the ISA Server. Here, I would suggest we perform the following steps
to narrow down the root cause of this issue:

1. Reset the IE settings to the default.
2. Clean Boot.
3. Add the two web sites to the Trusted sites zone.

The following are the detailed steps:

Step 1: Reset the Internet Options to Default
-----------------------------------------------------
1. Start Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. In the center section, Temporary Internet Files, click on the Delete
Files and Delete Cookies button.
3. Click Settings button, and then click View objects and delete all the
plug-ins.
4. Click the Security tab, click each item, and click Default Level.
5. Click Privacy tab, change to slider bar to Medium
6. Click Connections tab, click LAN Settings button, do not use the Proxy
Server.
7. Click the Advanced tab, click Restore Defaults, and uncheck "Enable
third party browser extension (require restart)".
8. Click OK and restart the system.

Step 2: Clean Boot
-----------------------
Let's perform a Clean Boot on the problematic workstation. A Clean Boot
will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs that are loading at
startup that may be causing a conflict with other device drivers or
programs that are installed in your computer.

A. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks)
and click OK.
B. Select "Selective Startup" and remove the check box for "Load Startup
Items".
C. On the "Services" tab, click Enable All.
D. Check "Hide all Microsoft Services", click Disable All and clear "Hide
all Microsoft Services".
E. Click the OK button and then Click Yes to restart your computer.

If the issue persists, please add the web sites to the Trusted sites zone
to see if the issue can be resolved:

Step 3: Add web sites to the Trusted sites zone
------------------------------------------------
1. Open an IE window, click Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
2. Click Security tab, click on the Trusted sites icon, click on the
Default Level button.
3. Click on the Sites button, type the URLs of the two web sites, and then
click Add button.

Note: The "http://"; or "https://"; needs to be included in the URLs, for
example, type "http://*.microsoft.com";.

4. Click OK twice, and restart the IE, and then test the issue again.

If the problem cannot be fixed by the above steps, please help to gather
the following information:
1. If you plug a laptop directly to the Modem/Router, and then manually
configure the TCP/IP settings, can you browse the Microsoft web site? If it
still doesn't work, you may contact your ISP to correct this problem.

2. Open IE browser, enter http://www.microsoft.com, does the correct web
page appear? What about the URL https://www.microsoft.com ? If it doesn't
work, please capture a screenshot of the error page and save it to a .jpg
file, then send it directly to my mailbox: v-edtian@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

3. In some cases, the problem was caused by third-party antivirus software.
If you have any anti-virus software such as Norton installed on the client
or the server, please temporarily disable it and see if the problem can be
resolved.

4. Have you found any related event log in the Event Viewer? If any, please
send them to my mailbox for further analysis. Please also type
"ipconfig/all" from the command prompt (without quotation mark) on the
server and client side, and send the output to my mailbox as well.

5. If you try using another browser such as Firefox, does the problem
persist?

6. If you put a healthy laptop into the LAN, then access the Microsoft
website again, does the problem occur?

7. On the SBS server and the client computers, open a command prompt, type
nslookup and then enter www.microsoft.com. Does the name resolution work
fine? If it doesn't work, please try to enter another URL such as
www.google.com, any luck?

I appreciate you taking time to perform the test and gather the
information. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or
concerns.

Have a nice day! :)

Best Regards
Edward Tian(MSFT)
