RE: strange problem.......

Hi Mark,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

Regarding the first question, would you please help me collect the
following information?

1. Does the situation occur on other shared folder?
2. Please try to add the win 98 client to domain:

555038 How to enable Windows 98/ME/NT clients to logon to Windows 2003
based Domains
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=555038

Does the situation still occur?

Also, to make the Win98 client work correctly in SBS 2k3 network, it is
recommended to do as following:

1. Install the latest version of the DS Client onto the workstation.

323455 Directory Services Client Update for Windows 98
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=323455

2. Check the domain controller default policy and change the following
under:

Computer configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local
Policies\Security Settings:

A. Microsoft network server\Digitally sign communications (always) enabled
- changed to disabled.
B. Domain Member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel data (always) -
set to disabled.
C. Network Security: Lan Manager Authentication level - Changed from "Send
NTLM response only" to "Send LM & NTLM responses".

Regarding the client computer in SBS 2k3 system, I would like to give the
following information.

Generally, the supported client OS for SBS 2K3 is Windows 98, Windows 2K,
Windows 2K3 and Windows XP Pro edition. However, it is designed for using
with Windows XP professional or Windows 2000 professional which can take
full advantage of SBS 2k3 network features. Please see the following link
for the system requirement:

http://www.microsoft.com/Windowsserver2003/sbs/evaluation/sysreqs/default.ms
px

For the 9x clients, we will lose many useful features such as ''connect
computer'' (this can help us to automatically install and configure the
client computers), Group policy, Companyweb (limited functions) etc.

Please refer to the SBS 2003 Help File (Server Management -> Client
Computer -> More Information -> Configure Client Computers -> Manage client
computers running earlier versions of Windows) and double-check if Windows
98 clients are properly configured.

Regarding the second problem, do you mean you have 2 accounts on one
profile? One is Exchange account, the other is an Internet POP3 account. To
meet this request, we need to ensure that the POP3 account is the default
one in the profile. However, per my research, I found that in an SBS
environment, even you set POP3 account as the default account, it is
automatically set Exchange account as default one after you restart the
computer. In this way, when you try to send an email out, it will use the
Exchange SMTP service rather than the external SMTP.

Based on my experience, this is should be caused by the SBS login script
which calls Application Launcher (Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small
Business Server\ClientSetup\Clients\Setup\applnch.exe). And AppLucher will
adjust the Outlook transport order to set Exchange as the default type.

You can create the following registry key at the client side to prevent
AppLucher change the order

Location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\ClientSetup
Name: NoTransportOrder
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 1

After doing that, change the POP3 account as the default account and test
the issue again.

In addition, to avoid the confusion, I suggest you either use Exchange to
host emails (POP3 Connector) or create two profiles in OL 2003 for the 2
email accounts.

You may refer to the following KB article:

834866 You receive a non-delivery report when you try to send an e-mail
message
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=834866

To create two profiles, one only includes the Exchange Account called
Internal and one just contains POP3 account called External then configure
the POP3 account to leave a copy of message on the server. After that you
can configure Outlook to prompt you for a specific e-mail profile by the
following steps:

- Open Control Panel.
- Click Switch to Classic View, and then double-click Mail.
- In the Mail Setup dialog box, click Show Profiles.
- On the General tab, click Prompt for a profile to be used under When
starting Microsoft Office Outlook, use this profile.
- Click OK.

For more information regarding the Profile, please refer to the following
Knowledge Base Article:

Hope the information help and I look forward to your reply.

Best regards,

| Question / problem 1
|
| I have an SBS 2003 network. All service packs up to date.
| I have a few XP pro systems logging on to the network and all is fine
there
| I also have 3 W98 systems. These systems do NOT log onto the network but
do
| have access to the server (via synched log on names and passwords)
|
| I then manually map a drive to a share on the server.
|
| The problem is this:
| Clents get errors about running out of disk space on the server ( on the
| server share are a couple DB programs that are accessed. (Quickbooks and
an
| Access database)
|
| If I go into My conmputer and find the mapped share and look at the
| properties of it, it tells me there 1G of space total.
|
| This share (and the drive) have over 53G available on them........
|
| If I do the same thing on the XP systems, the space is seen correctly
|
| I've installed WINS and the DS client and all that stuff.......
|
| Why are the W98 systems not seeing the correct size (this is causing an
| issue)
|
| Any thoughts?
|
|
|
| Question / problem 2
|
| On this same network.
| Exchange is up and going but is not used for external email.
| Email is a pop3 account that is setup for each user within Outlook (2003)
|
| The problem is that the pop3 will not automatically send and receive
email.
| If I do a 'send/receive' it is fine..
| I've checked the setting I know about about it connecting automatically
and
| all seems right...
|
| I thought maybe I had to set the pop3 as the default account in Outlook..
| but as soon as I do that and restart Outlook, it reverts to Exchange
being
| the default account....
|
| any thoughts on this one?
|
|
|
