Hi Jenny,
Update, I am at last getting to the issues with this server. I have now got
the backup working and also the Sharepoint to function at last. I will detail
what I have done and what is outstanding as I still need some help.
First I removed the Windows 2003 SP1 from server and re-booted.
I then tried the, ntbackup.exe selecting just one file.
It backup this file but gave errors in the log stating the following:
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:catastropic failure,
Reverting to non-shadow copy backup mode.
I then ran my vssrepair.cmd which includes what you had sent me to
reregister given files.
I then again ran the ntbackup.exe and this time it worked using the Shadow
Copy.
Now at this point let me fill you in on what I had found with my second
problem of the Sharepoint database STS_Config not found errors in the event
log. I believe this is tied into the backup problems as I could only get the
backup to work after I got my second problem sorted.
As you know I had errors generated every 20sec about unable to connect to
STS_Config as per the logs I had sent you. I now detail what I did to get
this to work again. Remember I have still not applied the WIndows Server SP1
again.
I applied the SQL 2000 and upgraded the instance of SHAREPOINT. This also
put on the Management tools of SQL. When I tried to add the database of
SHAREPOINT to the management it stated it could not find the database. This
gave me better understanding of where to look.
I notice another tool of SQL Server named, SQL Server Network Utility. Once
I had ran this and selected the instance of Sharepoint, I notice that no
network protocols had been assigned. I assigned TCP/IP and Named Pipes.
Hey presto when I then ran SQL Management I was able to connect to the
database. On checking the Application Event Log, I found that the error for
STS_Config had stopped. I was also able to connect to the Companyweb from IE.
I was also able to now see the VSS errors stating that DLL where not
registered.
As you can see these problems I was getting appeared to be linked together
owing to the SQl MSDE problem.
Now what I have seen so far is the following. Next day I found that the auto
backup setup via Server Management did not run. I again ran my vssrepair.cmd
and then found that the VSS worked again...sooooo is the self healing process
overnight resetting the registery ?.
I have still not re-applied the Windows Server 2003 SP1..(Reluctent but I
know it must be done) as I see issues with performance library which I
believe is the mismatch owing to Sp1 removed and SBS SP1 applied.
I have sent an email to DELL asking whether they supply an OEM Windows
Server SP1 as I cannot see any reference on their website. Rewgerences I do
see regarding SP1 have not been seen on my DELL Server.
Sorry it is long but I wanted to be clear on what I have found and still to
do.
