RE: make sbs backup eject tapes

Hi Jimmy,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

>From the description, I understand that you want to configure the SBS
server to automatically eject the tape when the backup task is finished.

As I know, the Ejecting operation should be supported by your hardware tape
device. Therefore you would first contact the hardware vendor or refer to
the device manual and see if it supports this operation. Also if the tape
device is not compatible with Windows Server 2003, it may also not be able
to eject. To check if your device is compatible with Windows Server 2003,
you can search it in our Server Catalog List:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/server/

Actually ejecting the tape can't be done using the backup utility; it's the
removable storage manager that controls the tape and it can eject it. For
more information, see:

314844 How to Schedule Unattended Backups by Using a Stand-Alone Tape
Library
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314844

You can do it through the GUI. In Computer Management, go to removable
storage. Open Libraries and right click on your tape drive and choose
eject. It can also be done from a command line. The command is RSM EJECT
and then you must specify the name of the device. The command line options
are explained in the online help (Help and Support Center.)

What I would suggest is to create a batch file that includes the backup
command as well as the RSM eject, and then modify the schedule in Task
Schedule to run the created batch file.

Open the SBS backup log (SBS Server Management console\Backup\View log) and
then you will see the detailed backup command that the backup runner
created.

I suggest we first use the RSM VIEW command to display the tape name and
execute the RSM EJECT command directly to confirm that your tape device
does support RSM command. Please follow these steps:

1. Insert the tape with backup file to tape device.

2. Bring up a command line.

3. Input the following command:

rsm view /tphysical_media

4. All the media name in your Library will be displayed as followings
including the tape name.

PHYSICAL_MEDIA

Monday-Full - 1
Tuesday-Full - 1
Wednesday-Full - 1
Thursday-Full - 1
Friday-Full - 1
The command completed successfully.

5. Find the correct tape name match your tape from the displayed list and
execute the following command.

RSM EJECT /pf "YourTapeName" /astart

Is the tape ejected correctly? If we can confirm that the tape can be
successfully ejected by above command, we can use the NTbackup command with
"/n" parameter to name the tape, and then use RSM EJECT command to eject
tape automatically. You can perform the following steps:

1. View the backup log file to determine the backup commend actually. You
can find the log in following location C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows
Small Business Server\Support\Backup Logs\sbsbackuplog01.log. You may find
the backup command as following content.

ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business
Server\Backup\Small Business Backup Script.bks" /d "SBS Backup created on
4/15/2004 at 11:30 PM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:on /m normal /j "Small
Business Server Backup Job" /l:s /p "4mm DDS" /UM NTBACKUP LOG FILE:
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup01.log

2. Run notepad.exe, copy the above information into it and also append the
RSM EJECT command to eject the tape when finishing backup. The content of
this file is like following.

==========
ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business
Server\Backup\Small Business Backup Script.bks" /d "SBS Backup created on
4/15/2004 at 11:30 PM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:on /m normal /j "Small
Business Server Backup Job" /l:s /p "4mm DDS" /UM NTBACKUP LOG FILE:
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup01.log

RSM EJECT /pf "Your_tape_name" /astart
==========

3. Save this file as a *.cmd or *.bat file.

4. Use schedule task to schedule running this file with your backup time
map.

Now when the backup finish, the RSM EJECT command will eject the tape
automatically.

For more information regarding scheduling a backup using a script file, see

I hope that the above information can be of assistance. If anything is
unclear or you have any further concerns, please feel free to let me know.

Best regards,
