Hello Dale,
Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.
I understand that you want to configure roaming profiles for your SBS 2K3
domain users. If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.
To do so, please read through my following information first and then
perform these steps:
1. Create a folder named "Profiles" (without quotation marks) in the
C:\Users Shared Folders folder. This folder will be used to store user
profiles.
2. Log on your SBS 2003 server as Administrator.
3. Open Active Directory Users and Computers (Run "dsa.msc") and expand it
to Domain.local\MyBusiness\Users\SBSUsers.
4. Select the users that you want to configure roaming user profiles. You
can hold down the Ctrl key and then select them.
5. Double click to "Properties" and go to "Profile" tab.
6. In Profile path, type the path that will be used to store the profiles,
\\ServerName\Users\Profiles\%username%, please replace ServerName with the
name of your SBS server.
7. Click OK.
For more detailed information, please read the KB article:
316353 How to configure a user account to use a roaming user profile in
Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=316353
Now when users log on their workstations, they will be using the roaming
profiles. However they will get a 'clean' environment because the default
user profile is used. They will have to re-configure their desktops, start
menus and some other personal settings. They can copy their documents from
their local computers to their profiles path and the information will be
uploaded to the server when they log off the workstations.
For more information regarding how to use Roaming User Profiles, you can
open Help and Support Center in SBS 2003, type roaming as the keyword and
then perform a search. You can also take a look at the following article:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/deploy
guide/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/de
ployguide/en-us/sdcce_term_yayd.asp
Some points you need to know when use Roaming User Profiles:
a. Do not use Offline Folder caching on roaming user profile shared
directories.
It is important to turn off Offline Folder caching for shared directories
where roaming user profiles are stored. If you do not turn off Offline
Folder caching for a user's profile, you might experience synchronization
problems when both Offline Folders and roaming user profiles try to
synchronize the files in a user's profile. This does not affect your
ability to use Offline Folders with redirected folders such as My
Documents.
b. Do not use Encrypted File System (EFS) on files in a roaming user
profile.
The Encrypted File System (EFS) is not compatible with roaming user
profiles. If you encrypt profile folders or files in the user profile using
EFS, the user's profile will not roam.
c. Do not set disk quotas too low for users with roaming user profiles.
If a user's disk quotas are set too low, roaming user profile
synchronization might fail. Make sure enough disk space is allocated to
allow the system to create a temporary duplicate copy of a user's profile.
The temporary profile is created in the user's context as part of the
synchronization process, so it debits the user's quota.
Hope this information helps. If anything is unclear, please feel free to
let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Best regards,
Brandy Nee
