RE: Recover SQL files & DST packages from server backup

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi George,

Thanks for posting here!

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

Yes, as you know the Eval SBS 2003 can not be upgrade to OEM SBS 2003 but
it can be upgrade to RTM SBS. This is because the evaluation edition is a
limited retail copy and it can only be upgraded to the full retail copy.

You can export the settings of the evaluation SBS box and then import them
after you install the OEM copy on the SBS box.

Open ''Server Management''; navigate to ''Advanced Management''\''Migrate
Server Settings''.

Also, if you want to keep the messages on your original Exchange server,
you can copy the Exchange metabase and log files, install the new box with
the original domain name and organization name and then copy the metabase
and log files to the newly installed OEM SBS.

I suggest that you follow the following KB article to restore or move
database.
314546 HOW TO: Move Databases Between Computers That Are Running SQL Server

================================
In order to backup and restore the DTS Packages, it depends on how they are
saved.

1. If the DTS Packages are saved to SQL Server, they would be saved in the
sysdtspackages table in the SQL Server msdb database. So, backing up the
MSDB database would also backup the DTS Packages.

2. If the DTS package is saved as a Structured Storage File, the DTS
package is saved as a file with the extension .dts. This will be outside of
SQL Server and you need to backup the *.dts files in order to backup such
DTS Packages.

The Database Maintenance Plans are also saved in the MSDB database. So
backing up the MSDB database would also backup the Maintenance Plans.

To move DTS packages, you may following these steps:

If DTS packages are stored on the source server in the SQL Server or the
repository,

1. Save the DTS package on the source server to a file, and then open the
DTS package file on the destination server.
2. Save the package on the destination server to the SQL Server, or to the
repository.NOTE: You have to move each package one by one in separate
files.

-or-
1. Open each DTS package in the DTS Designer.
2. On the Package menu, click Save As.
3. Specify the destination SQL Server.

Hope this helps! If you have any further concern or question on the issue
please feel free to let me know. I am happy to be assistance of you!

Have a nice day!

Best Regards,
