I am currently running sbs 2k on 3 SCSI hard disk drives. I have run out of
space on these hard drives therefore need to UPGRADE the SCSI hard disk
drives. At the same time as wanting to upgrade the Hard drives, I wish to
upgrade the Operating System. I have purchased the Swing IT migration tool
kit. Upon reading it, I am finding out that you need to have a temp DC to
transfer the info across from one machine to another. As I do not have that
luxury, I wanted to know how I could get the info off the current hard disk
drives, shut down the computer, place the new hard drives in and install sbs
2003 on it.
I wanted to know what was the best possible way to get the information of
such as Active Directory of the SBS2000 and place in onto the new hard
drives. As I am using the same machine BUT CHANGING the hard drives, how can
I migrate the data from one to another especially as they cannot be online at
the same time. They are using the same machine. This is all I wanted to know!
But when I was placing the new SCSI hard drives into the machine, I found
that one of the hard drives was faulty therefore was unable to go any further
with it. I wanted to know if anyone had seen the same error that I was
getting. The original SCSI hard drives were running a RAID 5 and I was trying
to get the new hard drives to become a RAID 5 but the RAID card could only
see two of them. I was getting a message saying 'Missing Component'. I tried
a few different ways for the Raid card to read the hard drive but no luck.
I have since taken the drive back and am waiting on a replacement.
So, again, I will be in the same predicament. How do you get AD of the SBS
2K, shut the machine down, replace the hard drives and get the AD to work on
the new operating system?
I use ArcServe Backup with the Exchange add on which means that I can
restore the mailboxes down to document level. Is it possible to restore the
System State from one operating system to another? Will this give me back my
Active Directory?
If not, is it possible to do a clean install on the new hard drives, create
the user accounts and printers and restore the Exchange mailboxes? And then
go to each workstation, demote it to a workgroup and then connect to the new
domain so that communication is back up and running. I have around 30 users
that I would need to set up.
I was trying to weigh up the pros and cons of using Swing IT but no one can
give me a straight answer. Seems to me that some people would rather be smart
with their tongues rather than smart with their brains.
If this isn't clear enough, I don't know what is!
As you can see, I went from one problem to another as they occurred.
If anyone requires further specs such as CPU, memory, position of tower,
please let me know. I will only be too happy to give you this information as
well!!!!!
