Re: WINS 4204 Every 40 Minutes

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I do understand your concerns. It is always better to know how it works
instead of how to make it work. However, I cannot find why we need to
modify these entries under "currentcontrolset001" key.
The registry keys and values which I believe can be used to resolve this
issue were found in our internal database, a previous case log. In that
case log, the issue is same with yours, and our development team has found
that modifying these registry keys and values can stop the release of the
packet every 40 minutes, and it has been proved by that customer. However,
there is no any explanation about it in the case log.
In addition, modifying the registry keys and values should stop the release
of the packet every 40 minutes, however, there is no way to disable the
release of the multicast packet on startup of the WINS server.
Based on my research, WINS server sends multicast packets to 224.0.1.24
every 40 minutes, this is a multicast packet sent by the WINS service
looking for possible replication partners. WINS periodically sends
information about itself by means of these packets. Normally, only WINS
server can reply these multicast packets. However, some network appliances
(such as router, printer, or computer) may also reply these packets, this
is abnormal, and if the WINS server receives these reply packet, the error
4204 will be logged. This error will not hurt anything, and the WINS
server will work normally.
Therefore, if modifying the registry keys and values doesn't work. We may
need to capture network traffic to find out which network appliance replies
the multicast packet.
If the issue persists after rebooting the server, please feel free to let
me know. Thanks for your understanding and I look forward to hearing from
you.
Have a nice weekend!
