RE: ISA Server Install Failure

Hi:
Thank you for posting here.

>From your description, I understand that you cannot install the ISA Server
2000 on your SBS 2003, you received an error indicating that "NTVDM
encountered a hard error". If I have misunderstood, please feel free to let
me know.

Based on my research, I have found a similar issue handled a few weeks ago.
Please see my suggestions below:

1. Firstly check the value of following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\NtfsDisable8d
ot3NameCreation
The value should be 0.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\Win95Truncate
dExtensions
The value should be 1.

Then, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK.
Type the following commands, and press ENTER after each command:
expand D:\i386\config.nt_ %systemroot%\system32\config.nt

expand D:\i386\autoexec.nt_ %systemroot%\system32\autoexec.nt

expand D:\i386\command.co_ %systemroot%\system32\command.com

Note: Here I assume D:\ is your CD-ROM Drive and the 1st OS Disk (not the
5th disk of ISA) is in the drive.

After that, keep the 1st OS CD in the drive, open the command prompt, enter
"SFC /PURGECACHE" and then enter "SFC /SCANNOW" (without quotation mark).
After that, please try installing the ISA Server again.

2. If the problem persists, please perform a clean boot on the server. A
Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs that are
loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other device drivers
or programs that are installed in your computer. Please also temporarily
disable any third-party anti-virus software on your server.

A. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks)
and click OK.
B. Select "Selective Startup" and remove the check box for "Load Startup
Items".
C. On the "Services" tab, click Enable All.
D. Check "Hide all Microsoft Services", click Disable All and clear "Hide
all Microsoft Services".
E. Click the OK button and then Click Yes to restart your computer.
F. Try to install the ISA Server.

3. If step 2 doesn't work, please reboot the server and go to the safe
mode, then install ISA again, any luck?
What about directly using the .msi packaged file from the ISA CD?

4. To make sure if the Windows Installer is broken, please try to install
MS Office or other MS applications, does the Office installation start
without any problems?

I hope the above information helps. Thank you very much for your time and
patience.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a nice day! :)

Best Regards
Edward Tian(MSFT)

| Wasn't sure whether to ask this question in the ISA newsgroup or this
one,
| but since I cannot actually install ISA, I figured this would be the best
| place to start.
|
| Basically, I am trying to install ISA Server 2000 from the SBS 2003
| Installation CD's onto my server. SBS 2003 was installed and configured
some
| months ago and has been running fine ever since. I now wish to install
ISA
| Server to use the Firewall feature and to setup further control on
internet
| access. I put the CD in the server and clicked Install Microsoft ISA
Server
| on the welcome box. After a delay of a minute or 2 the error message
"NTVDM
| Error encountered" pops up with the option of OK or Ignore. If you click
OK
| or Ignore the effect is the same .... nothing. In addition to this, I get
| event ID 26 in the System Log reporting "Application Popup: ntvdm.exe -
| System Error : NTVDM encountered a hard error".
|
| As well as this, all of my clients lose their internet connectivity, and
the
| Remote Access & Routing Service stops in error. I have to re-run the
Connect
| to Internet wizard from the Server Managment console in order to restore
my
| internet access for all clients and startup the Remote Access & Routing
| Service.
|
| As you can imagine, I'm not too keen on repeating this process and so
after
| twice getting the above results I figured I would seek some advice! Any
| ideas? All I want to do is to install ISA Server :-)
