Backup and Sharepoint

My problem is after the SBS SP1 update as done per the detailed instrucrtions.
Two issues have now arisen. First in the Backup always fail owing to VSS, I
have tried various steps I have seen in this forum but does not work.
Error is
Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: 4mm DDS
Media name: "Media created 02/09/2005 at 12:25"
Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
Timeout before function completed
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
Aborting Backup.

I have used vssadmin and can list volumes and 1 provider but when I list
writers it takes about 15mins to display info and all appears fine?.
My second problem is due to the sharepoint service and unable to display
company web site.
Error I get is this
#50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on
aalmarlon\SharePoint. Check the database connection information and make
sure that the database server is running.

Again looking at the forum on this matter has not helped me. Please note
that I use McaFee Virus Defense for the SBS 2003 Server.
