Lost emails (default recipient)

I stupidly misconfigured an exchange server without a proper default
recipient policy.
Client has been downloading mails for over a week now by pop connector
and the emails were being lost. (downloaded fine via the pop connector
but were not being forwarded internally to the right mail boxes)
Are these mails dropped into a default mailbox say postmaster or
system? Or are they gone forever?
If its the latter I have a serious problem :(
