Re: Exchange 2003 : restore pst files from priv1.edb

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

PSTs are completely separate from Exchange - the user's Exchange mailbox is
partly in priv.edb and partly in priv.stm.

PSTs are stored in the path specified in Outlook - usually on the PC (or in
the user's home folder). They are not usually used with Exchange except for
archiving. If the user has deleted email from a PST stored on the PC, it's
gone for ever. If it was in a PST stored on the server, you need to restore
the PST from backup (look in Outlook for the filename - probably
outlook.pst).

If the email was in the mailbox, the user could have gone to the deleted
items folder and clicked Tools, recover deleted items to get the messages
back (if they were deleted recently). No need to restore from backup.

Other options depend on what backup program you are using.

To find out how to recover a mailbox using the recovery storage group, try
the tutorial on Exchange disaster recovery in the MS TechNet virtual labs
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/traincert/virtuallab/exchange.mspx. It runs
thorough setting up the recovery storage group, restoring from backup,
restoring the mailbox of a user who was accidentally deleted and so on. But
if you have already restored you may not be able to use the recovery storage
group.
