RE: VPN fail to connect

Dear Lee:
Thank you for posting here. I am sorry for the delayed response due to
weekend. Please understand that the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by
Microsoft Support professionals to answer your systems and applications
questions. Your understanding is greatly appreciated!

>From your description, I understand that the VPN connection cannot be
established and PPTP utility works fine.

To narrow down this issue, could you do me a favor and gather the following
information:
1. Which version of ISA server do you use? ISA 2000 or ISA 2004?

2. How do you configure the VPN connection? In SBS environment, we can use
the Remote Access Wizard feature to do so. Go to the SBS box, open the
Server management console. Navigate to Internet and E-mail, on the right
pane, click "Configure Remote Access" and follow the instruction to finish
the configuration.

3. Does this problem occur on all the remote clients?

4. Does your VPN account have the available permission to connect in?
Please try using a domain administrator account and establish the VPN
connection again, does this problem persist?

5. Please logon to an internal client computer, manually create a VPN
Connection from the Network Connections folder, and then connect to the SBS
Server to see if it works.

6. If step 5 works fine, please help to perform the following test:

Please temporarily place a client computer directly connected to the
external NIC of the SBS Server (disable the firewall client). You can
connect the external network adapter of the SBS Server to a simple hub and
connect the client to the same hub. Manually configure the TCP/IP settings
on the client computer to be on the same subnet as the external network
adapter of the SBS Server. Then try the VPN connection again.

Can the VPN connection be established successfully?

7. Please send me the corresponding event log for further analysis.

In addition, you mentioned that PPTP utility works between the remote
client and the VPN server, can I assume that the output on the server side
looks as following:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Created socket for GRE protocol test
Listening on PROTOCOL 47 for incoming GRE packets...
Total GRE packets received = 1
Total GRE packets received = 2
Total GRE packets received = 3
Total GRE packets received = 4
Total GRE packets received = 5

=====
GRE protocol test was successful!
=====

Closing socket
Goodbye!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I appreciate you taking time to perform the test. Please feel free to let
me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Have a nice day! :)

Best Regards

| Hi,
|
| I've setup the VPN on the ISA 2003 and checked everything looked ok.
I've
| tested the connection using pptpsrv.exe and pptpclnt.exe OK.
|
| The strange thing is when I use the vpn client to connect through my xp,
I
| could only get to see 'Verifying username and password' and then it will
| time-out. A window will pop up to remind me about the GRE and firewall
| setup, which is why I did the pptpsrv/pptpclnt test. I deleted and
| re-created the vpn client on my xp and still didn't work. I could see
from
| my firewall logging that the client did made a connection and then the
| connection closed.
|
| Could someone help?
|
| thanks,
| lee
