Can't send outgoing email in exchange

Hi guys, getting kind of desperate here as I am having trouble again with
sending outgoing email via SMTP using DNS.
I am not geting DNS errors however, just the following in the management
console queues;

"The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt" yet all the
servers are vaild email servers.

Have enabled logging and the following appears;

SMTP GetNextHop returned hr=0x0 in 0ms.
DestAddr=<canterbury.ac.nz>, Type=<SMTP>
MsgType=0x2, NextHopType=OTHER_ROUTING_GROUP
Type=<SMTP>, Class=<canterbury.ac.nz>, SchedId=0xffffffff
RouteAddr=<canterbury.ac.nz>
Connector=<DNS>

So everything appears to be working but no email is going out.

Any ideas please?
