RE: Sharpoint Error in SBS 2003

Hi Rerry,

Thank you for posting here!

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

For your description, I understand that the issue is: when you access
Companyweb you got the error " Cannot connect to the configuration database
" and the 1000 error event is logged in Application log. If I am off base,
please don't hesitate to let me know.

Suggestion 1:
Based on my research, this behavior occurs if one of the following
conditions is true:
**The SQL database is not running.
-or-
** Internet Information Services (IIS) is configured to run in IIS 5.0
isolation mode.
-or-
**The account that is used by application pool does not have the required
permissions to the SQL Server database.

Please refer to the following KB article to try to resolve the problem:
You receive a "Cannot connect to the configuration database" error message
when you connect to your Windows SharePoint Services Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=823287

Have you upgraded the Sharepoint WMSDE to SQL server? And how you register
the SharePoint instance in SQL Enterprise Manager?

You can use the following steps to register the SharePoint instance in SQL
Enterprise Manager:

A. Click Start, point to All Programs\Microsoft SQL Server, and then click
Client Network Utility. Make sure "Enable shared memory protocol" is
selected.

B. Open Enterprise Manager, right-click a server or a server group, and
then click New SQL Server Registration. Click Next.

NOTE: If you selected the From now on I want to perform this task without
using a wizard check box the last time you used the Register Server Wizard,
SQL Server Enterprise Manager displays the Registered SQL Server Properties
dialog box. Otherwise, the Register Server Wizard is started.

C. In the Server box, type the instance name, ie, <sbsserver>\SHAREPOINT,
and click Add and then Next.

D. Click "The Windows account information I use to log on to my computer
(Windows Authentication)", and then click Next.

E. In the Server Group list, click a server group and click Next.

NOTE: If the group you need does not exist yet, create it by clicking the
build (...) button, and then completing the Server Groups dialog box.

F. Click Finish, and then Close.

Try to test, how about the result?

Suggestion 2:

This issue may occur when the SharePoint Timer Service tries to contact the
configuration database when the computer starts or shuts down.

If you can connect to Companyweb successfully, you can safely ignore this
error message. Or you can follow the steps in 840685 to work around this
issue:

840685 An event ID 1000 error message is logged to the application event log

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=840685

Try to test, how about the result?

Suggestion 3:

This problem can occur if a handle to a registry key is not closed
correctly. This "locks" the registry files so when Windows attempts to copy
these files as part of the roaming profile synchronization process it fails
(and this event is recorded). Several users have reported this problem as
occuring after the installation of various software packages. In most
cases, this indicates a bug in those applications.

One of the first steps to take in troubleshooting this problem is to
install the latest service pack.

RESOLUTION:

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended
to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to
systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may
receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by
this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003
service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support
Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product
Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit
the following Microsoft Web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;%5Bln%5D;cntactms)

Note: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for
the specific update in question.

You can refer to the following KB article to get detail info:

883521 Changes to your roaming user profile are not saved when you log off
and

Suggestion 4:

Antivirus programs like Norton or McAfee were causing this error. Most of
the users solved the problem by installing the latest patches or software
version for the particular program.

Another software that seemed to cause problems to many users is TightVNC.
Replacing it with standard VNC fixed this issue.

You can refer to the following KB article:

This one applies to Anti-virus effects:

Sysvol

Try to test, how about the result?

Please try the steps above one by one and let me know the results.

If the issue persist, please help me collect some information to further
troubleshooting the issue:

1. When the issue occurs, is the service MSSQL$SHAREPOINT running? Can you
connect to the SHAREPOINT instance by running "osql -E -S
<sbsserver>\SHAREPOINT"?

2. What's the version of Oledb32.dll file when the issue occurs? For
Windows Server 2003, the version must be 2.8.1022.0 or a later version.

3. Please paste all the accurate errors information in the newsgroup.

4. When you run "Monitoring and reporting", what is error message you got?
Can you give me a screen shot of the error message?

5. Can you give me a screen shot of the error message when you access
companyweb?

6. What has done two weeks ago? Has the server suffered any problems or
install any applications?

Please add all files to a zip file and send to v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

For your reference:

This one applies to improper permissions to the %SystemRoot%\Winnt\Sysvol
folder:
290647 Event ID 1000, 1001 Is Logged Every Five Minutes in the Application
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290647

This one applies to incorrect time on the client:
285923 Error Messages Every 5 Minutes Report Events 1000, 1001, and 13508,
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=285923

I appreciate you time and effort to perform test. I am currently standing
by for you about the test result. I am always happy to be of further
assistance.

Have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Jenny Wu
