Hi Mark,
While the web page below speaks about IBM servers, I believe the same
applies to Dell. Basically, the system allocates memory to PCI devices in
your server during boot up. This results in less RAM seen by the OS after
everything is loaded. Seems I remember reading that this occurs when you
put anything over 3GB of RAM in your system.
Memory recognized at POST does not match the amount of memory recognized by
the operating system - Servers and IntelliStation
