Hi Blondie,
Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.
As I know, the CAL license only limits the number of connected user not the
number of clients defined. You can add more user based on your requirement.
However, you can only let 10 clients connect to SBS at the same time and it
also depends on the CALs you have purchased. If you choose device CALs then
each device that accesses the Windows Small Business Server 2003 server
will consume a CAL. You can re-allocate that CAL if you retire a device. If
you have purchased User CALs, only the named user can access to SBS and the
licensed users can access the server from any device.
If the number exceeds 10, you will break the Licensing rule and receive the
alert message. You will need to maintain records of what you have
purchased, and how you have assigned the first 5 CALs that come with the
server. Windows Small Business Server 2003 does not provide an automated
way to track CAL use.
The following is the description regarding the Device CALs and User CALs:
Device CALs:
With device CALs, you acquire a CAL for every device that accesses your
server. With this option, any user can access the server on the licensed
device. Device CALs might make the most economic and administrative sense
for an organization that has multiple users for one device, such as shift
workers.
User CALs:
With user CALs, you acquire a CAL for every named user accessing your
server. The licensed users can access the server from any device. User CALs
might make the most sense for an organization that has many roaming
employees that need access to the corporate network from mobile devices
and/or employees who use multiple devices to access the network.

| I need a little more help in understanding how Client Licensing works ...
| and possibly some clarification of Microsoft's meaining of xx Clients.
|
| I manage a small SBS 2003 installation, with 10 CALs.
| There are currently 10 Clients defined.
| There has never been more than 7 clients connected at any one time.
|
| I need to add another Client ... and would like to sure that I am doing
this
| 'right'.
|
| Does the 10 CAL license limit the number of clients defined ... or
connected
| at any time?
|
| Do I need to disable or remove one of the existing 10 clients before
adding
| a new one?
|
| Can I simply add more clients and monitor the 'client connections'? ...
| attempting to keep it at 10 or below.
|
| Does the server simply refuse to allow the logon of an 11th client
| connection? Or ... is there something that I need to do to ensure
license
| compliance?
|
| Thanks
