Hi Brandy,
1. I am told that you MUST install Windows Server 2003 SP1 on a SBS2K3
system before you can install SBS2K3 SP1 as per
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b6f8a4c0-b707-4161-adeb-44f1b756119f&displaylang=en
It states that Windows 2003 Server SP1 must be installed prior to installing
SP1 for SBS2K3, along with a few other patches that it also lists on that
page.
As for removing SP1 from the system, this is not possible. The whole reason
for installing the service pack in the first place was because running
NTBACKUP.EXE previously caused the system to blue screen, leaving us without
a backup solution yet again. An issue that was mentioned as a problem fixed
by Windows Server 2003 SP1.
We installed the SP1 for Windows Server 2003 so we could get backups running
and thereby backup the system, to continue patching as recommended, but now
we cant even do this.
Furthermore, I would hate to try and do something as drastic as removing SP1
without a single backup of the system.
2. Performing a clean boot as you mentioned (disabling all non MS services)
did not improve the situation (still stops at the preparing to backup using
shadow copy).
3. I did actually use the SNAP switch in NTBackup, I found this
documentation on Thursday and tried it. However even with the SNAP switch set
as OFF and running the scheduled task, NTBACKUP does not display the NTBACKUP
interface, but the event log still gets the same VSS errors as mentioned in
my previous posts.. still no backup occurs.
In my previous post I was a little unclear about what I meant.
When I right click on the C:\ drive, there is a tab about 'Shadow Copies'
which is enabled. My thinking was that if I disable this feature, then
perhaps NTBackup will at least run to backup some of the data on the server.
I wanted to clarify that disabling THIS (shadow copies on C:\) option would
not effect the server in any way (such as overwriting new files with old
ones, etc..) and whether it was likely to help the situation we are currently
facing?
Please forgive me if I seem a little frustrated, but as you can probably
understand, problems like this can be very irritating especially when it is
not possible to reboot the server during the day, etc..
Thank you for your help so far, and hopefully we can come to a solution
quickly (even if it just means disabling shadow copies on the drives).
Regards,
Luke
