SharePoint - Storing Documents in SharePoint/SQL or File System?

Hello,

I am new to this newsgroup and SharePoint Services, and am nervous about
uploading all my customer’s shared documents from a file system into
SharePoint, where I understand they are stored within SQL server database. I
feel safer (mostly due to familiarity) leaving the files in the file system,
and putting shortcuts in SharePoint pages, though doing so will probably
disable features like version control, approval, check in/out, etc.

Looking for folk’s experience and opinions either way.

Thanks,
Harvey Juster
