Sorry, I didn't read every word of this, but other than the ping thing, is
everything working as expected? I wonder if the ping is the workstation's
Windows Firewall. To check, go to control panel -> windows firewall. Click
Advanced -> ICMP Settings. See if the top box is checked - allow incoming
echo request. If not, that would explain why the PC would not reply to
pings.
