Hi Mike,
Thanks for your updating.
Because the problem has disappeared, it may be difficult to troubleshoot.
Based on my experience, this issue can occur on the following situation:
1. The network shared folder is scanning by the antivirus program.
2. You have the offline caching feature enabled on the shared folder. I
suggest you do the following steps on the SBS server to disable caching for
the shared folder:
1) Click Start->Run, type "cmd" (without the quotation marks) and click OK.
2) At the command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER:
Net share
3) After the command executes, please find the share name of the folder
which has the problem. Then type the following command and press ENTER:
net share <sharename> /cache:no
You may refer to the following KB article:
830407 Offline caching of network files and folders may take longer than
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=830407
3. Make sure you have the latest service pack and hotfixes listed in the KB
(applies to Windows Server 2003 environment):
814112 Files on network shares open slowly, opens as read-only, or you
receive
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=814112
Note that this KB article gives a check list for 2K and XP kind of clients,
please make sure that your client computers have every required service
pack and hotfixes listed in this article.
810907 Error Messages When You Open or Copy Network Files on Windows XP SP1
- Clients That Require SMB Signing
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=810907
You may also copy the shared directory to another drive to see if the
problem still persists.
Hope the information help and I look forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| Hi Crina. Thanks for your post.
| For some unknown reason the directory started working 4-5 hours after I
| posted. I tried one of the fixes I found within the newsgroup but it did
not
| work (I tried it before I posted).
|
| 1. the server does have one NIC
| 2. it is through a UNC. I don't care for mappings, I have been on
networks
| that they just lead to more frustrations.
| 3. The directory was copied via CD
| 4. I can access successfully, but after I drill down to the second or
third
| level, it almost stops. There are no errors, Windows Explorer just hangs
| after a minute or so.
| 5. There are approximately 992 files, 152 folders and use approx 84 MB.
| There are no really large files (>3 MB). I do have about 4-5 zip files,
but
| they are not being accessed. They are 6-7 directories down.
|
| I had thought of permissions, but they are fine (equivalent to many
others).
|
| The only thing that I did was to delete the Network Place shortcut after
I
| experienced a quicker response by going through Entire Network and
drilling
| down that way. Disk qoutas weren't the issue either. Just magically
worked!
| I would like to find out the reason, as magic doesn't really apply with
| servers and computers!
|
| Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!
|
| Mike
