Best way - W2k Domain to W2k3 Domain - Keep user profiles

I recently took my Windows 2k Server offline and wanted to install a new PDC
from scratch. I gave the Windows SBS 2k3 the same IP address and same domain
name.
I also set-up all of the same user names and computer names I had been
using. When I hooked it up and setup the DNS and DHCP and tried to connect
the Workstations (Mostly WIN XP PRO) using the http://server/connectcomputer
site, it trashed the user profiles. Is there a way I can keep my user
profiles intact when setting up SBS 2k3 without migrating from the old Win 2k
Server. Luckily the old server had a registry problem which mysteriously
fixed itself and I am able to use it for right now.
I need to keep this simple as possible so I'm not lost in the translation. I
also have some CNC machines that connect to this Domain and must not lose
their info. Sorry for long winded question but I sure would appreciate any
help on this matter.
Thanks in advance.
