RE: Backup Wizard proper configuration Help

Hello Chris,

Thank you for posting back!

I understand that your concern is how to exclude the MDBDATA folder or
Microsoft Information Store in NTBackup.

May be I did not explain enough in the previous reply. Actually, you do not
need to manually exclude the MDBDATA folder or Microsoft Information Store
everytime when you about to run NTBackup. Please see my steps:

1. Go to Start -> Run "NTBackup", click Advanced Mode on the front page. I
assume this is the first time you run NTBackup.

2. Click Job on the Tool bar, select Load Selection, and load "Small
Business Backup Script.bks" from "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small
Business Server\Backup".

3. Manually exclude the MDBDATA folder or Microsoft Information Store.

4. Click Job on Tool bar again, select Save Selections, it will save your
current Backup configuration. So next time when you run NTBackup again,
just select Load Selections, it will load the Backup configuration and you
do not need to exclude the MDBDATA folder or Microsoft Information Store
any more.

For your other information:

1> The SBS Backup Configuration Wizard configures the Backup utility
(NTBackup.exe) to perform an online backup of the Microsoft Exchange Server
information store and to perform a file system backup of the MDBDATA folder.

The SBS Backup Configuration Wizard configures an online backup of the
information store and a file system backup of the MDBDATA folder because
both types of backup procedures are useful for different disaster recovery
scenarios. The MDBDATA folder backups are most useful for recovery if you
must rebuild the server. For example, use this backup if you must replace
or reformat the primary hard disk of the server because of a disk failure
or because of a controller failure. The online backups of the information
store are most useful for recovery when only the information store is
damaged.

840754 Backups on Windows Small Business Server 2003 may use more backup
media space than expected

2> Open NTBackup, open the backup set, on the Restore and Manage Media tab,
expand the Information Store\First Storage Group folder and you will see
three folders: Log Files, Mailbox Store and Public store.

But you cannot see any files when you select the Log Files, Mailbox Store
or Public store. If you select any of the folders in the left pane and look
in the right pane it will show you "No entries found."

That is normal behavior, because restoring part of an Exchange backup (just
a database or some logs) will not work.

Hope this information helps. If anything is unclear, please let me know. I
am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee
