Hi John,
Thanks for your reply.
Let us enable the SMTP logging and message tracking to see where the email
goes to:
1. Enable SMTP logging:
1) Open the properties page of the Default SMTP Vitual Server in Exchange
System Manager.
2) On the General tab, check the "Enable logging" box.
3) Click Properties, click the Advanced tab and check all the boxes on the
list.
4) Click OK twice.
5) Stop and restart the SMTP virtual server.
6) Try reproducing the issue.
7) Stop the SMTP virtual server.
8) Go to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\SMTPSVC1 folder and upload the
file to the thread (I suggest you hide your public IPs shown in the log).
2. Enable the Message Tracking logs. To turn on message tracking on a
particular server, follow these steps:
1) Start Exchange System Manager.
2) Expand "Servers", right-click the server that you want to use message
tracking on, and then click "Properties".
3) On the "General" tab, click to select the "Enable message tracking"
check box. This option logs information about the sender, the time the
message was sent or received, the message size and priority, and the
message recipients.
4) In the "Exchange System Manager" dialog box, click "OK".
5) To record the subject of any message sent to, from, or through the
server, click to select the "Enable Subject Logging and Display" check box.
6) You may find the log in the Log file directory section on General tab
and please post it to newsgroup.
You may also track a message by using the Exchange Server 2003 Message
Tracking Center, follow these steps:
1) Start Exchange System Manager.
2) In the console tree, expand "Tools", and then click "Message Tracking
Center."
3) In the "Server" box, type the name of the server that is running
Exchange 2003. To browse a list of available servers, click "Server", click
a server, and then click "Add". You can search for a message that was sent
from or delivered to a particular server that is running Exchange. You are
only required to specify the server name.

We may also check the Event logs. To do that, please follow these steps:
1. Select Administrative Tools and click Event Viewer.
2. In Event Viewer windows, click Application, select log files regarding
to it.
You may post these logs which you have changed your private information to
newsgroup.
Thanks for your efforts and time on this issue. I look forward to your
reply!
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| Dear Mrs. Li,
|
| Thank you for your email. I have tried what you suggested and my comments
| are as follows:
|
| a) Pop-up notification
| You were right about the messenger service and firewall port. Although I
| changed the setting per your suggestions, for some reason I cannot net
send
| from one machine to another. No matter, I shall investigate the cause for
| this problem
|
| b) Email notification
| Again, I check that everything is set as you suggested but I still cannot
| reveice any email notification. For this problem, I would appreciate some
| further troubleshooting from your side.
|
| Regards,
|
| John
