I'd recommend not attempting to install anything or change any
configurations until you get this sorted out.
- This sounds like it could be a spooler issue, especially since the spooler
service won't let you stop it, and since printing is failing. Anything in
the logs?
- In Task Manager, what process is showing excessive CPU or RAM usage?
- Go to the print spooler directory and check for any jobs stuck in the
print queue. If there are any files there
(windows\system32\spool\printers), delete them to the recycle bin.
Unfortunately you may have to disable the print spooler service and reboot
if the system won't let you delete the files.
- Even if there are no jobs stuck in the queue, since printing seems to be
implicated, you could try disabling the print spooler service and rebooting.
If the server comes up normally, you will have narrowed it down to the
spooler fairly conclusively. At that point, you could start the spooler and
see what happens. If there are still problems, hopefully something
insightful will get logged when you start (or attempt to start) the spooler.
- At some point you need to do a backup. Personally, I'd back up system
state, then Exchange and the user data in whatever order you prefer, then a
full system backup. Once you get the primary problem solved, you can devote
your attention to making sure your scheduled backups are running normally.
I try to monitor that every day.
- Look into a UPS, IMO a critical piece of hardware for any server.
