Re: Server replacement question

www.sbsmigration.com may be another option to consider.

You can have 2 SBS running for the purpose of migration. You cannot join the old server into the new SBS domain. Even if you uninstall all server componants (exchange etc) and demote the old box to a "normal server" the new SBS will not allow you to join it into the new domain via \\sbsserver\connectcomputer <file://%5C%5Csbsserver%5Cconnectcomputer>. The OS has some special code hidden that identifies it as a SBS and you will get an error message saying that you cannot join another SBS server.
There is however a sort of work around. After you have demoted the server you can join the domain from the old server (my computer/property/network identification). You can use it as a file and print server and you can use users and groups from the new domain for assigning access rights.
One limitation though: you cannot access the old server from the new SBS. It will give you an "access denied". You can however access the new server from the old server and map drives. So if you want to use the old server to store backups from the new server you need to initiate file copy from the old server.
Hope this helps,
Claus

Hello,
I will be replacing a current SBS server 2003 with a new server
after performing a fresh install on the new server. My question
is, I see that some people say you can not have more than one
SBS2003 server on a network. Is this true? If it is, then how
are you supposed to install a new sbs2003 server and move all
settings and data over from the old server?
Can I have two SBS servers? I would like to have a second one
that would be similar to a backup DC or at least have the
applications, user shares etc and leave the primary server running
all of the Microsoft apps that come with it.
Thanks.
