RE: Need help setting up VPN access

Hello Jack,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you want to setup VPN connection for some remote clients.
If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

To configure VPN connection, please see my following information:

1> If you have hardware firewall or router, please make sure it forwards
the traffic on TCP port 1723. Also make sure it is allowing the Generic
Route Encapsulation (GRE) protocol 47.

2> For IP configuration on server and client workstations, please see my
template:

On SBS server:

External NIC:
IP: assigned by your ISP or your hardware router
Gateway: your ISP or your Hardware router IP
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry

Internal NIC:
IP: Fixed IP
Gateway: None
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry

In the DNS console (dnsmgmt.msc), right click your ServerName and click
properties. In the Forwarders tab, your ISP DNS server IP should be
inputted there.

On workstation:

IP: Assigned by DHCP on SBS
Gateway: SBS internal NIC IP
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry

3> For detailed steps to set up VPN connection, please see:

1. Rerun CEICW:

a. Go to Server Management\ Internet and E-mail, on the right pane, click
Connect to the Internet.

b. Proceed to the page of Services Configuration, make sure that you have
checked the box Virtual Private Networking (VPN).

You can refer to the following KB article to rerun CEICW:

825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

c. Finish rest of the wizard.

2. Run Remote Access Wizard (Also in the same right pane as CEICW). Proceed
to the VPN Server Name page, type the fully qualified host name used to
access your server from the Internet or the external IP address of the
router (if you have router) in the "Server name" box.

3. Run Create Remote Connection Disk Wizard. Click Finish, then this wizard
will create two files inside the disk: setup.exe and sbspackage.exe. They
contain all of the necessary settings to configure the remote computer.

4. Insert the disk you have created in step 2 into remote clients'
workstations, and run "a:/setup" (without quotation marks) to connect this
computer to the server. Now the whole VPN connection will be created.

For more information, please see the following KB article:

2003

Hope this information helps. If anything is unclear or you have any further
questions or concern on this issue, please feel free to let me know. I am
looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee
