Speed Up Remote Access

I connect to our SBS over the internet using the "Connect to Small Business
Server" program that was put on my laptop when I first set up my laptop with
the server in the office. I understand that this is a vpn connection.
Everything was set up automatically so I dont know what parameters were used
to set up the connection.

When I am remotly connected to the server I am getting about a 500kbs
bandwidth connection for uploading and downloading files. My DSL connection
at home and the one at the office both show about a 3,000-4,000Kbps bandwidth
when I am not using vpn.

I have a Netgear FVX538 firewall router with vpn passthrough set on the
office side of things. The router has an 80MBps bandwith for vpn. Why is my
connection so slow, and what can I do to improve it?
