Re: RAID syncronization - How often?

As I was reading the Promise Array docs I came across this:
Synchronization is a periodic maintenance procedure for Mirroring (RAID 1,
0+1, 3, and 5) arrays to maintain data consistency on all mirrored drives. In
operation, array synchronization compares data on the mirrored drives for any
differences. If there are differences detected, data from the primary
drive(s) is automatically copied to the secondary drive(s). This assures that
all mirrored drives will contain the exact information.
Seemed logical, the server is still active and functions 'normal', and why
not do a sync just in case something is out of whack? RAID 1 only really
syncs when you are doing data transfers back and forth. It doesn't check to
see if the existing data is all synched up. Over time I would expect a
magnetic drive to possibly lose a little consistency and I'd like to have a
process run to make sure it is consistent.
Overkill? Possibly, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
