Okay, first: Hardware firewall as DHCP ... I know this is bad, but I
haven't settled on a standard yet... sometimes I've done it with
firewall, sometimes on Windows box... now that I think about it,
typically I use DHCP on the Windows Server, unless a firewall is
already in place, as was the case in this instance.
Next... SBS2000 is the DNS server, and of course, the DC. It has
backoffice functions including a SQL db. But really is just used 5x8.
Server2003 is member along with 11 production workstations that work
solid 7x16. 11 stations hit SQL database on Server2003 using IP
address. They are all static (only DHCP addresses are on backoffice
lan.)
I just replaced the production server and workstations with Server2003
and WinXP. They were NT6/Win98, but in workgroup mode. Maybe
foolishly, I joined everything to domain. There were benefits,
primarily in single sign-on and GPO functionality, but I need to make
sure that downtime on the SBS2000 doesn't take down the production
network.
If that isn't possible, then I made a serious mistake in going domain
with the production network.
