Re: SBS Backup Failure 5634

Either a higher capacity tape drive (and tapes) or move to alternating
external hard drives (USB, Firewire or SATA). You could also back up to a
workstation but I wouldn't use it as a permanent solution (no way to move
the backup off site for safe keeping). Also, Travan drives can be
problematic, so I'd avoid them if you can.

As I now look at the log you posted, it appears that 'hardware compression'
is turned on for your tape drive during the Backup wizard routine ("hc:
on") -

That should get you >30 GB capacity on a 20 GB tape.

As a further test of your system, you might try configuring a backup using
the native NTBackup in SBS 2003 (not the Backup Wizard from Server
Management). Select all files including the Information Store. Select to
use compression. Then see if a backup completes with this native NTbackup
routine. This will not take advantage of Volume Shadow Copy (backing up
"open" files) but it may give you some info as to whether your tape drive or
tapes are the problem.

BTW... make sure you clean the tape heads often.

Steve's reply also merits looking into.
