Hello Seow,
Thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroup.
Also, many thanks for Cris's great input.
According to your description, I understand that you have some questions
with Mailbox restore. If I have misunderstood your concern, please don't
hesitate to let me know.
Cris is right on target. If you delete a mailbox and the retention settings
for deleted items are not configured for mailboxes or if the time that
deleted mailboxes can remain on the server has expired, you can recover
mailboxes to an alternative server or to a recovery server. You can
recover the mailboxes from a backup without any interruption to your
production environment. For detailed information, please refer to the below
KB article:
823176 How to recover or to restore a single mailbox in Exchange Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823176
Additionally, I'm glad to provide the below information for your reference:
Windows Small Business Server 2003 provides a reliable way to perform
regular server backups to a tape drive, external hard drive, or network
share. The Backup Configuration Wizard allows you to easily configure your
backup. After a system failure or other disaster, you can restore your
server from your latest successful backup. You can use the Backup
Configuration Wizard to configure storage for individual files and e-mail
messages, so that they can be restored in the event they are permanently
deleted, without restoring the entire server. You can also configure backup
of your company Web site, so that you can easily restore files and list
items to the site.
Backing Up and Restoring E-mail
If users permanently delete an e-mail message from a folder, then, they can
recover the deleted message back to the folder that it was permanently
deleted from in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003. You can specify the number
of days to retain e-mail messages by using the Backup Wizard. The default
is 30 days. This only applies to e-mail stored by using Microsoft Exchange
Server, which includes e-mail delivered using the Microsoft Connector for
POP3 Mailboxes.
To get additional information, you may refer to the following KB article:

I hope this helps. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know. I am always happy to be of further assistance.
Best regards,
Nathan Liu (MSFT)
