Hi Ed,
Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.
>From your problem description, I understand this issue to be: after you
install the KB 829358, companyweb can not run and sharepoint instance of
SQLServer couldn't start. If I have misunderstood your concerns, please do
not hesitate to let me know.
As I know, it may be caused by after applying update the SQL Server
registry information for the path to the master database files was changed
and the startup failed to find the files in the location and MSDE fails to
start. Please try to change the registry settings and give the correct path
to master database files and master log file.
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\
Sharepoint\MSSQLServer\Parameters
3. Alter the values of SQLArg0 & point to correct physical path of
master.mdf
(The default path is "c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$SHAREPOINT\Data\master.mdf" change according to your MSDE
installation)
4. Alter the values of SQLArg2 & point to correct physical path of
master.ldf
(The default path is "c:\ Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server
\MSSQL$SHAREPOINT \Data\mastlog.ldf" change according to your MSDE
installation).
5. Close the registry editor.
6. Start the MSDE service from Services.
7. Check SharePoint site.
Please also check the file version of MSDE components. To do that:
1. Open Windows Explorer, and then navigate to \Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$SHAREPOINT\Binn\
2. Right-click 'sqlservr.exe' and choose 'Properties'.
3. In the properties window, click 'Version' tab. If the file version is
2000.80.884.0, the database engine should be updated (The original version
is 2000.80.880.0).
If the file was not updated, you may download the package from the
following link and then manually install the update:
Critical Update for SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) on Windows
Server 2003 (KB829358)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=814c230b-5c53-453f-
810a-b9505acf1392&displaylang=en
If the update is applied successfully, you may see an SQL icon in the
Systray. It is normal and you could delete the startup item for SQL service
manager to delete it. For more information, please refer to the following
link:
http://www.sbslinks.com/sqlpatch.htm
If the problem persists, please collect following information for further
research:
1. Do you have SQL server installed on your SBS server? If so, have you
upgraded your Companyweb instance to Full SQL?
2. Do you have any anti-virus software installed on the SBS server?
3. You may check the event log information as following:
1) Select Administrative Tools and click Event Viewer.
2) In Event Viewer windows, click Application and System, select log files
regarding to it.
If it includes error message, you may post the event log which you have
changed your private information to newsgroup.
4. Please post the "Windows update.log" file in C:\Windows to newsgroup.
5. Please post the C:\WMSDEHotfix.log to newsgroup.
I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Crinal

| Hello all,
| I am running a server with Win2003SBS Standard.
| A few weeks ago I ran the KB829358 SQLServer2000 update from Windows
update.
| On first run it seemed to hang on install for 35-40 minutes and then asked
| for a reboot. After rebooting the companyweb no longer ran and the
| sharepoint instance of SQLServer couldn't start. I have had about a few
goes
| at re-installing the update but all with the same affect.
|
| I'm not sure wether to uninstall all instances of SQLServer2000 and start
| again.
| Any suggestions?
|
| Regards,
| Ed.
