SBS2K3 Backup to hard drive ?'s

OK, so the travan tapes are now way too small to back up on. So, got 2 new
300gig external USB2 and Firewire drives.
Questions: I'm assuming it must be formated NTFS to avoid FAT's file size
limits. Any other neccesary or recommended setups for backups?
Have you found partioning a backup drive a good thing?
If so, with what scheme.
Any other pointers for backing up to hard drives?
Thanks in advance.
