Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.

After discussing with WSS Dev, we confirm it is by design in WSS that new
items are displayed with the "!new" indicator. There is nothing we can do
to turn it off. And the status will retain for sometime after you open it.
It is the by WSS by design issue also.

You may want to check the MSDN group to see if it is possible to modify
this behavior in a programming way:
