Hello John,
Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.
Before we go any further, I need your help to clarify the following
information with you:
Did you
a) Configure your SBS server to retrieve emails from an Internet POP3
server through POP3 Connector;
Or
b) Configure a client computer to be able to check emails on SBS server
through the POP3 service from the Internet;
>From your description, it seems that your case appears most likely is the
second scenario, because clients can connect to their POP3 Mailboxes from
LAN, not from the Internet.
Please perform following steps:
1. By default, the Default POP3 Virtual Server is stopped, so you need to
go to the Exchange Server Management\Servers\Yourserver\Protocols\POP3,
right click the Default POP3 Virtual Server and select Start. Then rerun
the CEICW:
a) Expand to Server Management\Standard Management\To Do List\Connect to
the Internet.
b) After the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard starts, follow
the instructions until you reach the Firewall page.
c) Click Enable Firewall, and then click Next.
d) Click Add.
e) Type Microsoft Exchange POP3 in the Service name box, click TCP in the
Protocol box, type 110 in the Port box, and then click OK.
f) Finish rest of the wizard.
For detailed steps, please see:

2. Have you enabled SSL on your Default POP3 Virtual Server? If you have,
please make sure that the TCP port 443 for SSL on your router/hardware
firewall/ISA is opened.
a) Expand to Exchange Server Management\Servers\Yourserver\Protocols\POP3.
b) Right click Default POP3 Virtual Server, Access tab.
c) Click Certificate, run the Web Server Certificate Wizard.
d) Proceed to the page of Modify the Current Certificate Assignment, if you
have not enabled SSL , it will ask you to select one of the methods you
want to use for this web site. If you have enabled SSL, it will ask you
"What do you want to do with the currently installed certificate".
3. Do you use Outlook Express to receive POP3 emails? The steps to
configure Outlook Express to retrieve POP3 emails is:
a) Enable and start Microsoft Exchange POP3 Service on your SBS 2003 Server
by using Administrative Tools -> Services management console.
b) Find a client workstation in the same LAN as your SBS 2003 Server.
c) Start Outlook Express.
d) On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
e) On the Mail tab, click Add, and then click Mail.
f) Type display name, and click Next.
g) Type e-mail address, and click Next. The e-mail address here is the SMTP
address of your Exchange mailbox, for example, youralias@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
h) Now, you can select POP3 as incoming mail server. In both incoming and
outgoing mail server boxes, you can type the NetBios name of your Exchange
Server in LAN (for example: yourexchangeserver), or FQDN name of your
Exchange Server (for example, yourexchangeserver.yourdomain.com) or the
internal IP address of your Exchange Server. Then, click Next.
i) In Account Name box, please type your domain user account name in the
format: yourdomain\youraccountname, and then type password of your domain
user account. Also, you can select Remember Password. Click Next and Finish.
j) After finish, please double-click the POP3 mail account you just created
and then go to Servers tab.
k) Select My server requires authentication check box.
l) Close all dialog boxes and quit and restart Outlook Express, then click
Send/Receive to see whether you can download e-mails from your Exchange
mailbox via POP3 protocol successfully.
4. If the issue persists after you perform the steps above, please help to
gather the exact error message you received when you try to connect from
the Internet, please paste the full content of the error message to the
newsgroup.
I am appreciated your time. If anything unclear, please let me know. I am
glad to be of assistance.
Best regards,
Brandy Nee
