One way to test the water is to see how many issues people have here with anti-virus. Trend seem to have the most problems - look back at the last months postings - regular issues ufortunately. At the moment the embedded Trend anti virus in a firewall appliance I am using has decided to treat random emails as infected - when they are not. Too many bad issues with Trend for my liking.

GFI released an update some weeks back that crashed servers - which was nice (they did say sorry!) - lucily I hadn't implemented their solution fully to experience the fun.

I recommend AVG myself having used most all of the others - most extensivley Network Asociates (Mcaffe). I see most of the main stream suppliers as being bloatware to justify the prices they charge. Some have huge updates, others much smaller but achieve the same results.

Have a look at AVG - it simple but effective and doesnt have the overhead of other scanners. I also found it runs with evrything - from 95, NT and Exchange 5.5 to SBS 2003 - a major plus for me as others have started dropping support for NT and Exchange 5.5. Decent support too (they answer the same day without having you jump through hoops).

This is a very religious question, and you're likely to incite religious zealoutry when it comes to the selection of an antivirus product to use. Everyone has their own personal favorite for various reasons.

We typically recommend Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.0 for file-level scanning, and GFI Mail Security for Exchange Server e-mail scanning. Symantec has proven to be a very stable product (though every product has an occasional exception) and easy to administer.

I am not certain if Symantec has a trial edition or not, but I do know that GFI does. You can find it at http://www.gfi.com.
