Hi Ralph,
Thanks for your reply.
>From your description, I understand the gateway gets changed when the
server is connected to sbs via Remote Desktop after you have created VPN.
By default, every user's logon script is SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat. If you
search the script in the server and open it with note pad, you would find
the only command to run is \\SERVERNAME\Clients\Setup\setup.exe /s
SERVERNAME. That means every time when the user logon to the computer, this
command will be executed. It has a complex mechanism to check the client
settings.
I think it is not good to move \\PORTER\Clients\Setup\setup.exe /s PORTER
from all client logon script. It may have some impact on your SBS network.
So, you may try the following steps:
1. Expand Advanced Management | Active Directory Users and Computers |
Server name | MyBusiness | Users | SBSUsers.
2. Right click the user you want to remove the logon script and select
Properties.
3. In Profile tab, delete the SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat in User profile column.
(I recommend you delete the login script only for administrator)
For the setup.exe in the logon script, it generally does the following job:
1. It works with the client apps component to install default client
application assigned by the wizard on the server and presents shortcuts to
customized apps delegated to clients/Installs apps.
2. Modifies machine time sync configurations at the registry level.
3. When run on a member server it will change your default gateway setting
to that of your SBS regardless of static entries under TCP/IP.
In addition, the following information is also highlighted from Spec:
1. Gets & checks the name that it is valid
2. Validates the requested IP address
3. Adds it to the SBS Servers OU
4. Specify a static IP & subnet mask (which server, if any is DHCP is also
covered)
5. Validates the requested static IP address
6. No profile migration to the server will occur
7. Connected printers will be published in the SBS AD
8. Install tsweb activex control so tsweb will work for all ts clients
Hope the information help and I look forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| Hi Crina,
| In answer to your query, the VPN is from Pix to Pix, no part of the VPN
is
| being handled by any servers.
| In regards to the Ipconfig /all being the same, having the VPN up or down
| isn't causing the gateway to change so the results are the same.
| The gateway gets changed when the server is connected to via Remote
Desktop,
| and here is the ipconfig /all of the server when the gateway is in the
| changed condition:
|
| Windows IP Configuration
| Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : empire
| Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Avsets.local
| Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
| IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
| WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
| DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : Avsets.local
|
| Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
| Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
| Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network
Connection
| Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0E-0C-3E-40-0D
| DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
| IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.17.2
| Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
| Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.1
| DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2
|
| I added a second server to the 192.168.17.x subnet and this server had
the
| same problem. I discovered that the cause of the gateway change is the
| execution of the SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat script. This is the default script
| which runs whenever a domain login occurs.
| The script runs slower via the VPN so I can actually open the cmd window
and
| also watch the network connect, while refreshing the network details I
can
| see several seconds while the gateway is actually empty, then the
| 192.168.16.1 setting appears and then the command window closes, as the
| script has completed.
|
| The script is located at:
| \windows\SYSVOL\domain\scripts\SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat
|
| and this is the contents:
|
| rem Default sbs2k3 client setup
| \\PORTER\Clients\Setup\setup.exe /s PORTER
|
| if I remove the setup.exe line and log onto Empire the gateway is
unchanged.
| I have a fair idea of what setup.exe is doing, but had no idea it could
| effect the TCP/IP settings. Is there a discription somewhere on this file
and
| what it does? Thanks,
|
