Re: REV drives and SBS 2003 (backup)

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your post.

>From the description, I understand that you want to use a Rev device with
the SBS 2003 server.

First at all, please make sure your Rev device is on the (Hardware
Compatibility List) HCL. If not, we can't guarantee its functionality on
Windows Server 2003.
To check the HCL, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/server/

Meanwhile, I still want to provide you with some suggestions for your
reference.

Based on my knowledge, the Rev device is treated as a CD-ROM drive in
Windows. We need to perform file based backup to write the data to the Rev
device. Regarding the /UM and /F switch, we cannot use them at the same
time. The /UM switch only supports media method backup. We must use the /P
switch to designate a device-type media pool when using the /UM. The CD-ROM
type device are not treated as available media, the /UM switch will not
take effect. Also, due to the confliction between /F and /P, we cannot use
/UM and /F at the same time.

The SBS backup wizard does not allow you to backup to
CD-ROM/DVD-ROM/Floppy. You will fail with the error message if you try to
select this drive from the list. Open Windows Explorer, you will know the
drive type from the icon. You may want to use the ntbackup program to
manually configure the backup tasks.

If you do want to use the SBS backup wizard, there is a potential work
around here; however, we do not recommend and support this. If REV drive is
actually detected as CD-ROM UDF format or Floppy disk, I would suggest you
contact the hardware provider to see if they have any driver update to
change this.

The work around (not supported) is to configure the SBS backup wizard to
backup the files to a hard drive. After completing the settings, run
regedit, navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Backup You
will find a key 'Backup location'. You can modify the value with the REV
drive letter.

I still recommend you use the ntbackup program to perform the backup tasks.

More info I:
This SBS Backup wizard selection cannot be set to a floppy disk, CDRW,
DVDRW or RAM disks. The selection of the system drive is not allowed. Any
other drive on the system is fine.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to let me
know.
